January 30th is “National Plan For Vacation Day”, the perfect opportunity to make self care and travel a priority. Whether it’s a springtime adventure, a summer vacation with the kids, or a romantic fall getaway- follow your heart and refuel your soul in Southern Oregon.
Plan a trip to Grants Pass, Southern Oregon’s adventure hub. Within an 80-mile radius of town, you can be rafting world-class whitewater, exploring ancient Redwoods, walking along the coast, hiking at Crater Lake, or spelunking at Oregon Caves National Monument. From its historic downtown and picturesque vineyards to its stunning mountains and rugged river canyons, plan an escape to the Pacific Northwest’s best kept secret.
Spring Adventures
When it comes to thrill seekers, spring is the ultimate adventure season of Southern Oregon. The temperatures are comfortable, river levels are full, and the landscape is alive with wildflowers. Throughout March to early June, you’ll discover plenty of opportunities for nature enthusiasts to enjoy the outdoors. Another bonus to spring travel is you’ll beat the summer rush by scoring sought-after campsites, hotel rooms, and tours. From multi-day excursions to invigorating daytime activities, explore some of Oregon’s most pristine backcountry surrounding Grants Pass.

Raft the Wild and Scenic Illinois River
Mention the Illinois River to any experienced boater and their eyes will light up. Considered a crown jewel of Western Whitewater, the Wild and Scenic Illinois River is legendary for its Class IV-V rapids, beautiful camps, and jaw-dropping scenery. This 34-mile trip flows through the northern end of the famously rugged Kalmiopsis Wilderness, located about an hour south of Grants Pass. Its beauty can be seen in its emerald green water, giant boulders, cascading waterfalls, and diverse & unique plant life. Unlike the Rogue, the Illinois River is free-flowing so its current and levels can be unpredictable, so the best time to book a trip is March-May.

Backpack the Rogue River Trail
If you love to backpack, add the Rogue River Trail to your Oregon bucket-list. Stretching from Grave Creek to Agness, the 37-mile trail traverses the wild section of the Lower Rogue River, as it winds its way towards the coast. Along the way, you’ll pass waterfalls, deep canyons, wildflowers, and a historic miners cabin. With multiple sandy beaches and bars to pitch a tent, there are plenty of places to camp. For something less rustic, plan to stay at one of the many riverside lodges located within the Wild section. While hiking in the Wilderness, it’s important to remember to plan accordingly. Bear canisters are a must, as wildlife is abundant. Shuttle service is available through multiple local outfitters to pick you up and return you to Grants Pass.
Bike Through Spring Wildflowers
Just a few miles from downtown Grants Pass, the 400-acre Cathedral Hills complex is home to one of the best wildflower displays in Oregon. During March and April, see an explosion of color as vibrant Warriors Plume and Shooting Stars blanket the forest floor. While biking through tunnels of manzanita, old growth pines and madrone, take in the sweeping views of the mountains surrounding Grants Pass. The versatile 10-mile trail system is rated for both easy and more strenuous excursions, offering visitors a “choose your own adventure” experience. For something more off the beaten path, plan a ride at Bolt Mountain. The technical trail offers more challenging terrain for seasoned riders as well as 360 views of the mountains. Need to rent a bike? No problem, find a ride at Bikekraft.

Book a Guided Fishing Trip
The Rogue isn’t only great for hiking and rafting, it also provides world-class fishing. The Wild and Scenic Rogue River is renowned for its salmon and steelhead, having over 215 miles of fishable water. The river is floatable for drift boat fishing from the hatchery at Lost Creek Lake to the Pacific Ocean, passing through the heart of Grants Pass. With year-round angling opportunities, the Rogue presents incredible scenic beauty, abundant wildlife, and whitewater thrills along the way. March through May is primetime for fishing, as anglers will find winter steelhead peaking in March while the first run of salmon arrives in May. Experience some of the best fishing in the West and book a guided trip with a local outfitter.
Before or after launching your adventure, explore downtown Grants Pass, where you’ll find dozens of locally owned restaurants, bars, and shops. Catch a show at the historic Rogue Theatre and grab a bite to eat at one of the many food trucks at Weekend Beer Company at the top of town.
