Discover Grants Pass, Oregon: Perfect for a Long-Weekend Getaway

Nestled in Southern Oregon’s Rogue Valley, Grants Pass is a destination packed with adventure, culinary delights and family-friendly activities, making it your ideal destination for a weekend getaway.

The town owns a wonderful up-and-coming vibrancy. Visitors come for the thrilling river excursions and days spent savoring award-winning wines and the farm-to-table culinary delights.

Here are the top reasons why you’ll fall in love with historic Grants Pass and the Rogue Valley in Southern Oregon.

1. Adventures on the Rogue River

The Rogue River, a National Wild and Scenic River since 1968, offers 215 miles of pristine waters for endless recreation. Stay at the Riverside Inn (986 SW 6th St.) to enjoy stunning river views and easy access to activities.

A highlight from my recent visit was a four-hour jetboat ride with Hellgate Jetboat Excursions, starting just steps from the inn. The flat-bottom speedboats zip through Hellgate Canyon, delivering thrilling spins and splashes while showcasing ospreys, bald eagles and other wildlife that calls the waterway home. The excursion includes an all-you-can-eat barbecue dinner at a riverside lodge.

For more adventure, outfitters like OARS and Morrisons offer whitewater rafting trips with Class I–IV rapids, perfect for thrill-seekers or those preferring a serene float.

Kayaking and paddleboarding are available on calmer sections of the river, while anglers flock year-round for salmon and steelhead fishing.

2. Savor the Applegate Valley’s Food and Wine Trails

Southern Oregon’s Applegate Valley is a hidden gem for foodies and wine lovers. The Applegate Valley Wine Trail, part of the 275,000-acre Applegate Valley AVA, features 19 family-owned wineries like Wooldridge Creek Winery & Creamery, which pairs its wines with house-made cheeses, and Troon Vineyard, known for biodynamic practices and varietals like Syrah and Chardonnay. I enjoyed tastings and a tour at Troon, learning about its sustainable farming business surrounded by stunning Siskiyou Mountain views.

The Rogue Valley Food Trail (roguevalleyfoodtrail.com) complements the wine trail with 52 stops, from farms to restaurants. Highlights of my trip included Pennington Farms’ blueberry scones, Whistling Duck Farm’s organic produce, and Rogue Creamery’s award-winning Rogue River blue cheese. Lillie Belle Farms in Jacksonville offers gourmet chocolates. The self-guided Rogue Valley Food Trail, spanning from Grants Pass to Ashland, showcases the region’s farm-to-table ethos and lush natural landscapes.

3. Explore Oregon Caves and Cave Junction

A 40-minute drive from Grants Pass, Cave Junction is the “Gateway to the Oregon Caves” National Monument and Preserve. These “Marble Halls of Oregon,” formed over millennia, feature stunning stalactites and stalagmites. My two-hour Discovery Cave Tour covered a mile of narrow passages and 500 steep stairs, revealing nature’s artistry in a cool 44 degrees F setting. Family-friendly and off-trail tours are also available from late March to early November (book via recreation.gov).

Cave Junction offers more: Great Cats World Park houses 32 big cats, Illinois River Forks State Park has a swimming hole and disc golf, and Eight Dollar Mountain Botanical Area is perfect for hiking. Don’t miss Taylor’s Sausage Country Store, a Southern Oregon landmark since 1924, serving handcrafted sausages and jerky in a cozy diner setting.

4. Stroll Historic Downtown Grants Pass

Downtown Grants Pass, a National Historic District, exudes charm with its well-preserved buildings (many of which are adorned with vibrant murals).

This is where you can enjoy the abundant dining and shopping opportunities. Enjoy rooftop cocktail and dining at The Bohemian Bar & Bistro, upscale dishes at Carson’s Bistro or wood-fired pizzas at The Haul. Catalyst Pizza Co. also is a local favorite.

Browse antiques at Old Town Antique Mall or take a self-guided walking tour from the Downtown Welcome Center (198 SW 6th St.).

Grants Pass blends adventure, flavor, and history into a perfect weekend escape.
