Best Detour You Never Planned: Cave Junction

Finding yourself in Cave Junction with a little extra time on your hands? Good news: you landed in the right place. Tucked between the Siskiyou Mountains and the Wild and Scenic Illinois River, the Illinois Valley is one of Southern Oregon’s most underrated destinations. Here’s how to make the most of your visit.

Grab a Coffee (or a Meal)

Start with caffeine. CJ Coffee and Grill and Coffee Heaven are both great stops for a morning pick-me-up with light bites, while Trillium Bakery offers a fuller menu for those who arrived hungry. Once you’re fueled up, you’ll have plenty to keep you busy.

Get Outside

The Illinois Valley is surrounded by some of the most ecologically distinct landscapes in Oregon, and much of it is surprisingly easy to access.

The Eight Dollar Mountain Boardwalk Trail is a must. This short, wheelchair-friendly boardwalk winds through wetlands home to the Darlingtonia californica, a carnivorous pitcher plant (also called the Cobra Lily) found almost nowhere else on Earth. It’s genuinely one of the stranger and more wonderful things you can stumble upon in Southern Oregon.

Down the road, the Rough and Ready Botanical Wayside offers a similarly unique experience: a gentle trail through what looks like a high desert but receives up to 160 inches of rain per year, supporting the highest concentration of rare plants in Oregon. It’s a “rainforest desert,” and it earns the description.

For water lovers, Lake Selmac is perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and lakeside picnics. Illinois River Forks State Park is another great option. Bring a disc if you have one, as the park features an 18-hole disc golf course (the park host sometimes has loaner equipment). And for those who want a quieter nature experience, Rusk Ranch Nature Center and Jubilee Park, complete with a splash pad for the kids, round out the options nicely.

Explore Some History (and Maybe a Legend)

The Siskiyou Smokejumper Base offers a look into the history and training of wildland firefighting in the region. History buffs will also want to make time for the Kerbyville Museum, which captures the pioneering character of the Illinois Valley.

And then there’s the Southern Oregon Bigfoot Experience — because why not? Whether you’re a believer or just in it for the adventure, it’s a genuinely fun stop and very much in the spirit of the region.

Go Underground

Twenty miles up the mountain from Cave Junction sits one of Southern Oregon’s most extraordinary attractions: Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve. Ranger-guided tours wind through a marble cave system formed by millions of years of dripping rainwater. Above ground, the monument’s hiking trails pass through old-growth forest and high mountain meadows, including a path to the Big Tree, the widest known Douglas fir in Oregon.

A few practical notes before you go: tours run seven days a week, and tickets sell out fast in summer. Your first stop should be the Illinois Valley Visitor Center right in Cave Junction, as they sell same-day tickets on a first-come, first-served basis, and they can tell you current wait times before you make the 45-minute drive up the mountain. Arrive early if you can.

Eat and Drink Well

The Illinois Valley punches above its weight when it comes to food. Carlos Restaurante is a local favorite, and Wild River Pizza & Brewing is perfect for a sit-down meal with house-brewed beer. Perfect Pizza Plus adds an arcade to the mix for families. For more casual eats, River Valley Restaurant, Taylor’s Sausage Country Store, and Pappy T’s Pub & Grub all deliver delicious comfort food with local character.

Don’t overlook the food trucks: Bobbalou’s (burgers), Vango’s Hawaiian Fusion, and Inferno (wood-fired pizza) are all worth tracking down. And save room for a scoop at Yeti’s Ice Cream & Treats before you leave.

Wander and Browse

Crystal Kaleidoscope is a gem shop that earns its name; it’s the kind of place where you wander in for five minutes and resurface an hour later. Caves Pharmacy is one of those classic small-town pharmacies and often carries unique local gifts. Both are worth a browse.

Explore Wine Country

The Illinois Valley is home to some of Southern Oregon’s most distinctive wineries, shaped by a cooler, marine-influenced climate that produces wines with bright acidity and elegant structure. Foris Vineyards is one of Oregon’s oldest, known for Alsatian-style whites and Pinot Noir. Augustino Estate offers tastings in an extraordinary treehouse perched above a 400-acre ranch with sweeping views of the Siskiyous. Bridgeview Winery is a scenic, relaxed estate perfect for a slow afternoon glass. Last but not least, Deer Creek Vineyard brings together regenerative farming, cool-climate varietals, and a thriving music scene (check their calendar for Thursday open mic nights).
