6 Colorful Fall Hikes Around The Rogue Valley


Autumn in the Rogue Valley is a hiker’s dream — golden light spilling through oak woodlands, crisp air carrying the scent of pine, and trails that wind through some of Southern Oregon’s most breathtaking landscapes. From misty riverside walks near Grants Pass to panoramic climbs overlooking vineyards and forested hills, every path invites you to slow down and soak in the season’s colors. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, leaf-peeping along creeks, or exploring high-country ridges, fall hiking around the Rogue Valley offers a perfect blend of serenity and adventure.

Waters Creek Interpretive Trail
Located along Redwood Highway near the community of Wilderville, the trail winds its way along Waters Creek, passing scenic foot bridges, towering douglas firs, and golden oaks and big leaf maples. Choose between the 1-mile accessible loop trail or take a longer jaunt along the 3 mile East Branch of Waters Creek.

Enchanted Forest/ Felton Memorial Trail
Crunching leaves, crisp air, and a trail that lives up to its name, the Enchanted Forest/ Felton Memorial Trail in Applegate Valley serves up killer views of the Valley and vineyards below. For a quick and easy walk, take the short loop trail along the Enchanted Forest trail which skirts through an oak savannah or follow the steeper path up the mountain for panoramic vistas. About a mile in, hikers can opt to take a right along the Felton Memorial Trail which gradually climbs to a clearing where you’ll find a memorial for three people killed in a helicopter crash. Not only are the views rewarding, but afterwards, hikers can reward themself with a stop at neighboring wineries, Wooldridge Creek, Walport Family Cellars, and Schultz Wine.

Takelma Gorge/ Upper Rogue River Trail #1034
For some of then best fall foliage around, follow the Rogue River to Prospect and hike along the Upper Rogue River Trail #1034. Beginning at the Woodruff Bridge Picnic Area, the 3mi roundtrip hike to Takelma Gorge passes vibrant vine maples, old growth conifers, and incredible volcanic geology. The gorge features a 90 degree “fish hook” as the river makes a sharp turn through deep pumice cliffs, evidence of Mount Mazama’s explosion. For those wanting a longer hike or even a multi-day adventure, the Upper Rogue River Trail is 43 miles long in its entirety and offers multiple access points where hikers can view the Rogue Gorge, Natural Bridge, and cascading waterfalls.

Rainie Falls Trail
October is prime time for watching the salmon and steelhead make their brave climb up Rainie Falls, so plan an autumn adventure along the Wild and Scenic Rogue River. From Grants Pass, take the scenic drive out to Galice and follow the 4-mile round trip Rainie Falls trail which offers stunning scenery of the river and surrounding mountains. The trail passes by old growth madrone, golden oaks, and a few creeks crossings . Along the way, you’ll encounter remnants of a 1908 suspension bridge that washed out in the 1920s and have glimpses of the Rogue River Trail across the river.

Dollar Mountain Trail
Located just minutes from the heart of downtown, the Dollar Mountain Trail offers one of the best vistas of the city. Starting from the Crescent Drive trailhead, weave between panoramic hillsides, manzanita tunnels, and madrone and oak forest while taking in the views of town and the surrounding valley. For those who’d rather ride, the brand new Dollar Mountain Trail System is now open to the public and can be accessed at the Hieglen Loop Parking lot. Enjoy 25 miles of single track just minutes from downtown Grants Pass.

East Applegate Ridge Trail
For panoramic views of Applegate Valley and the snow dusted Siskiyou Mountains, hike along the East Applegate Ridge trail that meanders through golden-hued oak savannahs, sunny hillsides, and lush old growth forest. The trail follows the ridge, affording hikers 360-degree views for the majority of the hike. The 5-mile point-to-point trail is a moderately trafficked and open to biking, horseback riding, and pets. The trailhead also provides ample parking and restrooms. On the way back to Grants Pass, drop by one of the 20 vineyards located along the Applegate Valley Wine Trail.
