Celebrating 65 Years of Hellgate Jetboats

Hellgate jetboat ripping big waves on the Rogue River

Renowned for its whitewater, salmon fishing, and rugged beauty, the Rogue River has drawn visitors from all over the world for over a century. One of the best and most accessible ways to explore this Wild and Scenic designated river is on a thrilling Hellgate Jetboat Excursion which gives passengers the chance to spot wildlife and pass through the towering Hellgate Canyon. This year marks their 65th anniversary, so make sure to add a river trip to your Grants Pass bucket list.

Established in 1959, Hellgate Jetboat Excursions was one of the first ever jetboat companies in the United States. Today, it continues to be regarded as the premier river trip in the Pacific Northwest. The boats, which are custom built here in Grants Pass are unique in that they can whip through rapids and speed through shallow sections with just a few inches of water. One of the best aspects of these excursions is that it is accessible to all abilities. The jetboats provide a safe and comfortable ride for people who normally could not enjoy river recreation due to physical or other limitations. While touring the river, visitors are afforded breathtaking views and a unique river experience that showcases the flora and fauna of Southern Oregon. Additionally, the knowledgable staff share interesting facts about the history and geology of the Rogue River as it journeys from town to the wild section.

Jet Boat Excursions

With five different excursions to pick from, passengers can choose their own adventure. For those crunched for time, consider the one-hour “River Run” trip. Along the journey, enjoy 360 spins and splashes on your way down to the confluence of the Applegate River before returning to Grants Pass. For something a little longer and scenic, try the two-hour “Quick and Scenic” excursion which pilots guests to the legendary Hellgate Canyon. Here you’ll get up close views of the Rogue’s deepest river canyon with soaring walls rising 200 feet above. While there, learn about its history as a Hollywood filming location, including credits in Rooster Cogburn (John Wayne/Katharine Hepburn), A River Wild (Meryl Streep/Kevin Bacon), and Gunsmoke. Pair your river trip with a nice meal and choose either the four-hour “Brunch” or “Dinner” trip that brings guests through the canyon before stopping at their exclusive Hellgate River Lodge Restaurant. The longest trip offered and the one with the most thrills and scenic views is the five hour and 75mi “Whitewater” excursion which passes Hellgate Canyon and dozens of rapids before reaching the restricted section at Grave Creek. On the return trip to Grants Pass, guests stop at the River Lodge where they can enjoy the brunch buffet and drinks from the Whiskey River Bar. Visit their website to check out current promotions, like Throwback Thursdays and Family Night deals.
